Why Fall Makes Me Smile

Last night, I heard a good theory as to why people such as myself like Autumn so much. People like Fall because they have more energy to spend, as they don't have to work so hard at cooling themselves off. I'm not sure if science can back me up here, but it seems like a pretty solid idea. Now that the thermometer has dropped down to a comfortable range, I do feel more inclined to get outside and go running or play frisbee. In fact, I just went running this morning.

It has been a odd fall up here. Very wet. The remnants of all those hurricanes have made their way up here, brining some very non-New York downpour with them. It's kinda fun, as long as you are not stuck in a flooding subway tunnel. It looks like there will be more rain to come this week, when #4 heads up the East coast.

I'm glad I'm not at Disneyland today....

Birds, Stinkin' Birds

I suppose that it was bound to happen sometime in my life.

A bird shat on my head today.

It is quite an unpleasant experience. I don't think that there is a graceful way to recover from airborne scat falling from the heavens. If you had seen me from afar, you would have seen this guy minding his own business as he walked down the sidewalk, then suddenly swerved erratically and started rapidly wiping his head in disgust, cursing for no apparent reason. If you would have been a little closer, you would have seen the projectile poopie hit his head and heard him begin chanting "shit, shit, shit," oblivious to my fortuitous selection of swear words.

I can't blame birds too much. Whose to say that Superman never did the same? If I could fly, I sure would be temped.

Yay, new shoes!

I finally got a new pair of running shoes. I've been meaning to get some new ones ever since my last pair ran a flat a while ago. Now, finally, I am all set to get back running the loop at the park--that's Prospect Park, for you non-Brooklyn readers--something I haven't done seriously since I ran the New York Marathon. It's remains a great run, especially with the big hill at the end. It's a killer, even more so now that I'm back to base-level fitness.

I've gotten back on the fitness wagon a little too late to run the marathon this year. I think that I may volunteer that day. That'll do me just fine. Maybe in a few months I'll be ready to run anther 26 miles somewhere more exotic. I hear there is a race up and down Pikes Peak...

Anyhow, I really like autumn. It is the best season of the year. Everything is in a state of transition, and there is an urgency to get everything done before winter hits. Such as my need to get back into running. It's much harder to run once it starts snowing.

What Did I Learn Today?

From Esy:

brrr- i learned a new computer command in quark- i forgot what it was.

From Andrew:

There are many beautiful girls in this world. I learn this every day. I wish subway romances would work.

Morning Writers Block

It is harder to come up with creative ideas before your first cup of coffee. I was thinking that I could just bang out one of these entries before I head off to work, but I’m not having much luck thinking about anything more than that I’m still tired. In such cases, I usually just start writing and hopefully something pops into my head.

Nothing in particular is popping into my head this morning. I was looking for some new running shoes yesterday and nobody had the pair I was looking for. While this was mildly annoying, I am at a loss to find the universal truth in that experience. Maybe shoe stores are not the best places to seek profundity.

Fortunately, I have to leave now. While this is poor for you, the reader, this is great for me. I can stop with all this smart thinking and get back to what's important to me right now. Breakfast.

The Bronx Bison Herd

For those of you have not been, the Bronx zoo is great. I've heard that it is one of the best ones out there, and I can see where they are coming from. I am no zoo aficionado, but this one is better than the ones at Oklahoma City, Dallas and Houston. There are hardly any crazy animals to be found. I nearly forgot that these animals were there against their will.

It really makes me happy to know that there is a herd of buffalo hanging out in the South Bronx.

About Pine Wood Derbies

There are few truisms I've found in life and this is one of them. Anyone who was in Cub Scouts did a pine wood derby. You ask them and they will be thrilled to talk about how their specially designed block of wood made it to the bottom of the tracks.

While all Girl Scouts were making sit-upons -- another truism -- us boys got to whittle away a little racecar with their dads. I think that my Dad did most of the actual work like the sanding, the painting, the wheel attachment, the greasing of the wheels, but I think that I at least came up with conceptual design of the car.

And it was an awesome car. And the second one was pretty good, too. I even got medals, would you believe. Glory for all, and in particular, me.

When I heard that an art museum was having a pinewood derby, I knew that I had to do it. What a better way to cross back over the bridge into Cub Scouts. It’s time again to let the best car win.

Thus, the aforementioned Parsley Mobile has been made. I hope that it will bring me glory and fame. Lacking that, I at least hope that it will give me a trophy of questionable worth.

The races begin the first of October. I'll be sure to tell you if I get any prizes.
